Nice Try, Jane Sinner by Lianne Oelke: Review

Hi guys, Victoria here! And today I'm going to be doing a review for Nice Try, Jane Sinner by Lianne Oelke!

Nice Try, Jane Sinner
By: Lianne Oelke

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Synopsis: Expelled high school student, Jane Sinner, is pushed to attend Elbow River Community College after a personal crisis. She agrees to go, but on one condition: she moves out of her parent's house. Searching for somewhere to live, she finds and signs up for a Big Brother-esque reality show called House of Orange, which is a low budget show run by the students of Elbow River. The winner gets a used car among other prizes. Will Jane's competitive nature be enough to outlast the competition and win the grand prize?

*TRIGGER WARNING: Depression and suicide talk. While these aspects aren't the main focus of the book, there is mention of both of these topics. If you are triggered by these things, be aware that they are discussed in this novel.

My thoughts:

I have very mixed feelings on this one. While I did like a lot of things about this book, there were some things that just didn't work for me. Let's start off with what I liked:

-The plot: I love watching trashy reality tv competition shows such as Survivor, Project Runway, The Amazing Race, and many more, so I really appreciated that I could read about this instead of watching it. That being said, I haven't read any book that had a plot similar to this, so it was a really refreshing read!

-Jane!: I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jane as the main character! I found her very relatable as I have dealt with some of the same issues myself. It was super fun to read from her perspective and I laughed out loud multiple times throughout this book (the dry-humor is everything :))!

-The unique dialogue structure: I enjoyed how the dialogue was set up. It was presented like it would be if you were reading from a script, which I have never seen done before.

-The intense psychological discussions: This book has many psychological aspects to it, and I really liked when it dove deep into those topics (like depressive and suicidal episodes). I thought it was really interesting and gave me new insight on these topics.

-Sister relationship: Jane and her sister, Carol, have a great relationship, and I love reading about books that include sisters. I don't know, I just really liked the bond that they had...

Now on to the things that I didn't really enjoy:

-How long it took me to read this: Oh. My. Goodness. I don't know if I wasn't motivated to read this or it was just too long or what...but it took me like 2 weeks to read this. Although it was 400 pages, it would usually take me a week or less to read a book of that size. And as February is the shortest month, I would've liked to be able to get through more books, but since this one took me so long to finish, that most likely won't happen.

-Robbie: Robbie is the "love interest" in this book, I guess you could say. BUT I FREAKING HATED HIM! I would've rather had no romance (although you guys know how much I love a good romance) over him because I just hated him so much...

Although there are only a few things I had a problem with, they impacted me enough to make me lower my rating.
--------------------

Overall, I did enjoy this book, but it was just kind of an average read to me. I would recommend it I guess, but I won't be re-reading it.
